Interesting are walks in the region under Biokovo Mountain, to the hamlets of Bast and Topici, famous for home-made cheese, prosciutto and home-made bread (´ispod peke´). Easy trails are those leading to Promajna and the fishermen s hamlet of Bratus, a fine example of profane architecture.
BASKA VODA, a town and harbour on the Makarska littoral, 9.5 km northwest of Makarska. Economy is based on farming, fishing and tourism. Chief crops include olives, vines, sour cherries and figs. Forests and pebble beaches favoured an intensive development of tourism. The sea depth along the pier in the harbour reaches 7-11 m. Baska Voda is located on the main road, so-called Adriatic Highway (M2, E65) Split - Dubrovnik.

Philip and James), Biograd na Moru, Pakostane and Drage, as well as of several places on the island of Pasman: Tkon, Kraj, Pasman, Barotul, Mrljane, Nevidane, Dobropoljana, Banj and Zdrelac, and Vrgada on the island of the same name. Thanks to its position in the most indented part of the Croatian Adriatic coast, the area provides excellent opportunities for nautical tourism and boating as one of few parts of the Mediterranean. In the close vicinity are three national parks: Paklenica, Kornati Archipelago and Krka, as well as Telascica Nature Park.
Apart from cultural and historical heritage, Biograd is also characterized by nice beaches, picturesque bays and various accommodation facilities. The town has a number of restaurants offering specialities of local and international cuisine.
The tourist development of Biograd started between the two world wars. The first guest, the Czechs, started to visit Biograd during the 1920s. The first hotel was erected in 1935 on the location of the present hotel Ilirija.

Bol has a years-long tradition in tourism. The Society for Beautification of Bol and Tourist Traffic was established here in the 1920s. The construction of the first accommodation facilities started in 1963, to experience a rapid development during the seventies. Today Bol offers a number of modern, high-class hotels, hotel villages and apartments.
Numerous restaurants in the town offer specialities of local and international cuisine and exquisite wines of Brac (the famous ´Bolski Plavac´). Bol also offers many cultural and entertainment programs. The most important event is the folk feast of Our Lady of the Snows (5th of August), in commemoration of the day when, a legend has it, it was snowing here; it is also the day of the Bol municipality.

. Hot summers are moderated by landward breeze. The air temperature in the autumn and winter months is considerably lower due to the fierce bora (´vruljska´). The town of Berulia, mentioned also by Constantine Porphyrogenitus (10th c.), emerged at this location. The present town developed in recent times by migration of the population from small villages and hamlets under Biokovo Mountain. The parish church from the 19th century was built on the location of an earlier Baroque church; next to the cemetery is the mediaeval necropolis with eight tombstones adorned with reliefs (shields and swords). The church houses several tombstones from the 18th century.

CAVTAT, a town and port in the southern part of the Zupa Bay, 20 km southeast of Dubrovnik. Major tourist attractions include a very pleasant climate, luxuriant vegetation and nice shores. Economy is based on tourism, while chief occupations in the surroundings of Cavtat include farming and fishing. The port is enclosed by two peninsulas: the south-western Sustjepan separates it from the channel, which is enclosed by the Cavtat reefs of Bobara and Mrkan. East of the Rat peninsula is the Tiha bay. Accommodation and catering facilities are located in the background of the town port and the Tiha cove. Nice beaches stretch all the way to Cape Prahljevac. Cavtat is located on the main road (M2, E65). It is very well connected with major Croatian cities through Dubrovnik and Cilipi Airport, while local communications with the surroundings include ship and bus lines.

This area used to be the seat of the one-time County of Drežnik which was first mentioned in the 11th century. The masters of Drežnik Castle were princes the Nelipić’s, princes the Gisingov’s, princes the Babonić’s, the Subić’s. and from the year 1323, the place was ruled by the Frankopan’s. It remained to be their property until the mid-16th century. At the time of Turkish conquerings and invasions Drežnik Castle was a very important defensive foothold that was repeatedly conquered, ruined and rebuilt. In 1791 when a peace treaty was concluded in Svištovo, the old town of Drežnik was acknowledged its affiliation to the Habsburg crown. In 1866 the imperial erar sold the fort Drežnik to a tradesman who then started pulling the ramparts down and selling the building-material.

JELSA, a small town and port on the northern coast of the island of Hvar. Economy is based on farming, viticulture, olive growing, fishing, shipbuilding, seafaring and tourism. Jelsa is located on the regional road running throughout the island. In the mid-19th century, the marshland around the coast was reclaimed and the new centre of Jelsa was gradually built there. Local roads connect Jelsa with the neighbouring villages (Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirce, etc.). There are also regular ship lines with Split and Bol on the island of Brac.
The first habitation grew out around the small church of St. John in the Field, which was in the 17th century reconstructed and converted into a Baroque-style structure of an octagonal ground-plan. A square was formed around the church and it got its present aspect in the period between the 17th and the 19th centuries. - The fortified parish church of Sts. Fabian and Sebastian, built in the 16th century, is a three-nave structure covered by a stone barrel vault. LASTOVO, a small town above the northern coast in the north-eastern part of the island of Lastovo; elevation 26 m. Economy is based on farming, growing of vines and olives, fishing and tourism. The pier is located in a small, shallow cove called Sveti Mihovil (St. Michael), protected only from southerly winds. Lastovo is located on the regional road running throughout the island.
Apart from several late mediaeval small churches (St. Martin, St. Anthony, St. Blaise), Lastovo also features the oldest monument - the parish church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian from 1473, later extended (16th/17th c.). The well-known Croatian printer Dobric Dobricevic (1454-1528) is of Lastovo descent.

 and Spital. In the Roman times (the ruins of the Roman aqueduct) there was a town called Cissa (the present hamlet of Caska) in the surroundings of Novalja. Novalja is a town of a compact coastal type which expanded considerably in the recent times. Chief occupations include farming, viniculture, livestock breeding, fishing and tourism. The port of Novalja is well protected from the winds of the first and second quadrants; the westerly and north-westerly winds are extremely strong. When entering the port, larger vessels have to beware of the shallows (8.5 to 9.8 m) 1.8 southwest of Cape Vrtlic. The pier in the port provides shelter to smaller vessels; there is a 98-m long embankment made of rocks. Larger vessels can anchor at the entrance into the port off the north-eastern coast, and smaller vessels and yachts in the centre of the port, at a depth between 5 and 8 m. Situated on the regional road (29) running through the whole island.
Novalja developed on the site of the ancient settlement Novalia which represented the southern port of the Roman settlement Cissa (today Caska). From the Roman times parts of the aqueduct, several inscriptions and architectural plastic forms have been preserved. In the early Christian times there was a large basilica urbana in the centre of the town, with a semicircular apse and mosaics (remains of architecture, plastic forms, inscriptions). In 1971 two decorated reliquaries were found there: a bronze one from the 4th century and a silver one, from a later period. On the same place the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gothic style was erected, annexed in the Baroque period, which holds the painting of Our Lady with Childfrom the 16th century. The present parish church of St. Catherine was built in 1906.

, a historical, political and cultural centre of the Vinodol principality, owing to the evergreen vegetation, the Mediterranean climate, clear sea and air, is one of the oldest Kvarner tourist resorts.
It is best known for the Vinodol Law from 1288, one of the important European Medieval documents the aim of which was to insure the serf - plebeians and protect them from the excessive influence of feudal power.

Opuzen was mentioned in the Middle Ages under the name Posrednica. In the 14th century it was a market-town of the Dubrovnik Republic (burned down in 1472); at the end of the 15th century it was the location of a fortress called Kos; in 1685 the Venetians built another fortress (Fort Opus) on the same location. - The parish church was erected in the neo-classicist order. The vestibule of the municipal hall keeps several sculptures from the ancient Narona. South of Opuzen is the hamlet of Podgradina with the remains of the mediaeval fortification Brstanik, built in 1373 by the Bosnian king Tvrtko; it was destroyed in the 15th century by the Turks, and restored by the Venetians and Austrians (1878).

The ships passing through the Peljesac Channel sound their sirens to greet the church of their patron saint and the resting place of deceased captains, and are replied by sounding of the monastery bells.
Close to the monastery is the village of Karmen with several mediaeval monuments. It is the starting point of walking tours to the picturesque upper villages of Ruskovici, Stankovici and Podvlastica. One of the favourite ascents to the peak of Sveti -Ilija (St. Elias) (961 m) also starts here.
Numerous traditional religious feasts take place in Orebic and the surroundings, the most notable being the feast day of Our Lady of Karmen (16th of July). Theatre tours are organized in the summer months, as well as other cultural events and entertainment programs.

The first public beach, Bagno Polese, for the citizens and tourists, located between the islet of Ulja-nik and the administration building on the coastal promenade, was opened in 1885. After that, two other beaches were constructed, ´Sakordana´ and the marine officers beach on the islet of St. Peter, where men and women could swim at different times of the day. During the First World War the Zelenika beach was opened, and in 1936 the Stoja beach (Stabilimento bagni di Stoia). The first modern hotel in Pula - Hotel Riviera - was opened in 1908. Under the Italian rule, the hotels Miramare, Bologna, Milano and Centrale were operating as well as the children’s summer camps Principe di Piemonte on Stoja and Sandro Mussolini on Vargarola. In the 1930s Pula had several travel agencies. Tourism in Pula experiences its peak in the 1960s, when on the beautiful, well-indented and green coast south of Pula the construction of modern tourist resorts was initiated (Zlatne Stijene, Ribarska Koliba, Verudela).
Today Pula offers a variety of excellent opportunities for tourists. Together with well-equipped hotels and other types of accommodation facilities, the tourist offer includes many sports grounds, recreational facilities and entertainment programs, terraces with live music, discotheques, casinos, inns and restaurants, as well as diverse excursions. The town disposes of two marinas, so that yachting tourism is increasingly developing. Pula is also a well-known congress centre (the large congress hall in Hotel Histria). The town can be reached by various means of transport, and there is an airport in the immediate vicinity of Pula (6 km), constructed to meet the requirements of international air traffic.
Events: the Croatian Film Festival has been organized traditionally every year since 1954 in Arena (July), the Pop Music Festival ´Arena´ is also held in Arena (July), Art & Music Festival - the rock music festival (in August).
Pula is also a centre of sport tourism because domestic and international sports teams and athlets find the favourable climate, quality sports facilities (tennis courts, sports halls, football stadiums, football fields, track-and-field courses, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, water sports facilities, etc.) suitable for winter training season. PULA, a town and port in the south-western part of Istria. Situated in the inner part of a bay, divided by the islands of St. Catherine, St. Andrew and Uljanik into three port basins. According to the size of the con-structed coast and level of equipment, Pula is the most important and biggest port in Istria, and the well-protected Pula Bay places it among the best natural harbours on the Adriatic. Supetar was inhabited already in the Neolithic (Kopacina Cave near the town) and the ancient per-iods (early Christian sarcophagi by the church on the graveyard). It keeps paintings of the local Baroque painter Feliks Tironi. The Baroque altar palla is a work by an anonymous 18th-century Venetian painter. There are several tombstones, made by Ivan Rendic from Supetar, on the graveyard. The Mausoleum of the Petrinovic family, with portraits and statues, is a work by Tomo Rosandic. - The pre-Romanesque small church of St. Luke from the 11th and the 12th centuries is located on the road to Donji Humac.

The church keeps an altarpiece featuring Our Lady of the Rosary, a 17th-century work of a central Italian school. - The citadel of the Marja-no-vic Family (1777) rises on the coast, with a sun dial on its front. The Natali-Bozicevic House originates from the Renaissance period. The summer mansion with a park by the poet Jeronim Kavanjin (17th-18th c.) dates from the Baroque period as well as the Ilic Park. The Definis house accommodates a collection of furniture and works of art from the beginning of the 19th century.

VELA LUKA, a town and port on the western side of the island of Korcula, 45 km to the west of the town of Korcula. The major part of the town spreads over the slopes of Spilinski Rat (150 m) and the mildly descending plateau between the Rat and the Humic elevation (183 m). The surrounding hills protect it from the northerly and southerly winds; the landward breeze often blows in the summer. The average air temperature in January reaches 7.9 °C and in July 24.9 °C; 2,671 hours of sunshine a year (in the summer 11.3 hrs a day).
